2024 Wayfarer Irish National and Cullaun regatta. Report Margaret Hynes

Last Weekend Cullaun Sailing Club welcomed boats from Greystones, Dunlaoighre and East Down Yacht clubs to compete in the  2024 Wayfarer Irish National and Cullaun regatta

Big winds were the order of the day with average mean wind of 18knots, gusts of 20+ on Saturday Sundays wind felt stronger than wind of 16 knots on Sunday. 8 of the 17 entries were Wayfarers.

4 races were ran on Saturday featuring yours truly capsizing with Spinnaker, hitting a race mark and struggling to keep up with the leader on Saturday Gordon Jess and Rachel Bevan , EDYC. Chris and Andrew Caher CSC showed their style at the top of the fleet , with Jim O Sullivan and Kevin Donlon CSC also heading the fleet, both in Plus S boats.

Tired sore bodies were slow to launch on Sunday with forecast of gust in the  high 20,s. OOD Dave and crew Tommy checking wind speeds only recorded highs of 19.5 knots so the course was set for three races. The first race took out leader Gordon and Rachel when a very strong gust recorded. The battle on Sunday was between three Cullaun boats , which lasted until the final race when Margaret Hynes and Mike Hayes, pipped Chris and Andrew Caher winning by one point. Jim O Sullivan and Kevin Donlon were third.

George Fitzgerald and Frank were 4th in their GP 14, fresh from their recent training session in Cullaun for bronze fleet sailors.

Maebh Hawkins and Ingrid Biesty were first juniors and congratulations to all juniors who took part.

EDYC made a special presentation to Cullaun SC of a trophy on honour of our recently deceased member and Wayfarer sailor Emmet O Mahony. He had a heart of gold, died of a heart condition and the trophy will be presented to a club member who has contributed to the club in the same spirit of generosity that Emmet lived. Emmet crewed for me in the Worlds in Weymouth.

Thanks to OOD, Dave Mullaly (Killaoe Sailing Club), rescue boat crew and shore party who fed us all when we arrived safely ashore.

A great weekend was had by all, thanks to all our visitors and we look forward to welcoming you to our special club in the Mid west of Ireland.

Thanks to my hardworking crew, Mike Hayes, without whom we would not have won!

Regards

Margaret W10826

Club AGM Thursday 25th January 2024

Monday, 22 January 2024 / Published in General

The Club committee oversees all aspects of club activities, and seeks to grow and develop the club for the benefit and enjoyment of all members.

The success of Cullaun Sailing club is measured by our continual progress as a team. Strong club committee’s have steered the club over the last 45 years.

We invite you to become part of Cullaun Sailing club’s committee. Your involvement will help to maintain and build a stronger sailing club for the future generations.

Every committee needs new people, new ideas, new vision.

All committee roles support each other and there is also great support from club

members.

You don’t need to be a sailor to be part of the committee.

Committee members have a three year term unless they leave early.

Meetings take place every month for approx. (1 Hour) and Zoom continues to be the preferred meeting format (kicked off by Covid).

This AGM is not a Zoom meeting and its brilliant that we can have a social occasion in Gallaghers Klkishen. There are rumours about sandwiches and tea..

Vacant Committee positions  at the 2024 AGM are as follows and the duties involved:

Commadore

The role of Commodore is to provide leadership to the Club, ensuring that the Club is run according to its constitution and to represent the Club at official functions, specifically: – The Commodore shall provide a report to each AGM on the activities of the organisation.

Bosun

Safety, maintenance and correct operation of the club power/sailingboats

Maintains stocks of fuel, and spares. Ongoing Repairs.

Property manager

The property manager generally oversees all aspects of building functions and guarantees the safety and functionality of all facilities. Duties include running routine safety inspections, corresponding with contractors, planning maintenance work, keeping  a record of works.

Social secretary

The role of a Social Secretary is to organise well run, fun social events. Their role is important because socials allow members to get to know each other better, enjoy themselves more…and ultimately build greater commitment to your Club.

This roll wasn’t filled last year. It always gets great support from other members.

2023 Committee

Commodore: Margaret Hynes (Outgoing)

Treasurer: Billy OMahony

Secretary: Michael Collins

Sailing Secretary: Matt Stenson

Property: Frank Mulqueen (Outgoing)

Bosun: Des McMahon (Outgoing)

PRO: Pat Biesty

Junior Sailing Officer : Vicky Stafford

Safety Officer : Richard Flanagan

Social Secretary : Vacancy

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the committee members for their hard work and commitment during my time as Commodore over the last 3years. The comittee teamwork and the help from club members for events and weekly racing was fantastic.

Also to wish the new committee well in its continued work to make this club the best it can be.

And if your interested in the committee and cannot make it on the night drop me an email.

All the best

Margaret Hynes,

Outgoing Commodore
