IRISH SAILING AWARD WINNERS

Irish Sailing Club of the Year went west again this year to Cullaun Sailing Club who made the trip from Co. Clare to Dublin to receive their award. Cullaun are a fully volunteer-led club and represent the embodiment of Irish sailing values.

Cullaun Sailing had their AGM in Gallaghers in Kilkishen on Thursday 23rd January  This meeting was well attended and   filled with discussions, reflections, and heartfelt appreciations for the work that goes on behind the scenes as well as the members that are in committee roles.

Commodore Jim O Sullivan expressed sincerest thanks  to the outgoing committee members who have dedicated their time, energy, and expertise to the club. Their unwavering commitment and hard work over the past year have ensured the smooth running of our club and the success of numerous events. Their legacy includes the fabulous regatta last summer, the sailing workshops for young sailors, and the improvements made to our facilities. These efforts have significantly contributed to fostering a stronger sailing community at Cullaun.

We are excited to welcome the incoming committee members who are ready to take the Tiller and steer the club towards new horizons. We are confident that their fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and enthusiasm will lead us to even greater achievements.

Don’t Look Back in Ongar

A flotilla of 6 boats took to the water for Day 2 of the Cooler Series on Sunday 13^th October .

As Race 1 started , the fleet got a dose of the F.O.C.S’s , ie, Four on the Course side of the Start  !

The OOD sounded the Recall but only George and Frank returned to the fold to start again , and they were ultimately rewarded with a first place . The moral of the story being , as Ross O Carroll Kelly might put it , when the Recall goes , don’t look back in Ongar !!

Brian Park and Tomas Galvin came second with Maeve Hawkins and Peter Collins a creditable third having had problems throughout with an unruly rudder blade .

Race 2 enjoyed a full compliment of participants with a great start by Peter Collins and Maeve Hawkins , whose racing strategy was augmented by “ starboarding “ both George Fitzgerald and Brian Park, respectively, to finish third again, having kept their rudder blade almost completely dry .

Line honours went to Margaret and Mike with an impressive return to form , with Billy and John finishing a fine second . George and Frank finished the race in an unorthodox manner , but , then again , those guys would do anything to get on camera !

Having checked that their Life Assurance was in order , the OOD team returned to shore just before the rain arrived after an enjoyable afternoon’s sailing .

View this email in your browser 2024 Wayfarer Irish National and Cullaun regatta. Report Margaret Hynes Last Weekend Cullaun Sailing Club welcomed boats from Greystones, Dunlaoighre and East Down Yacht clubs to compete in the  2024 Wayfarer Irish National and Cullaun regatta Big winds were the order of the day with average mean wind of 18knots, gusts of 20+ on Saturday Sundays wind felt stronger than wind of 16 knots on Sunday. 8 of the 17 entries were Wayfarers. 4 races were ran on Saturday featuring yours truly capsizing with Spinnaker, hitting a race mark and struggling to keep up with the leader on Saturday Gordon Jess and Rachel Bevan , EDYC. Chris and Andrew Caher CSC showed their style at the top of the fleet , with Jim O Sullivan and Kevin Donlon CSC also heading the fleet, both in Plus S boats. Tired sore bodies were slow to launch on Sunday with forecast of gust in the  high 20,s. OOD Dave and crew Tommy checking wind speeds only recorded highs of 19.5 knots so the course was set for three races. The first race took out leader Gordon and Rachel when a very strong gust recorded. The battle on Sunday was between three Cullaun boats , which lasted until the final race when Margaret Hynes and Mike Hayes, pipped Chris and Andrew Caher winning by one point. Jim O Sullivan and Kevin Donlon were third. George Fitzgerald and Frank were 4th in their GP 14, fresh from their recent training session in Cullaun for bronze fleet sailors. Maebh Hawkins and Ingrid Biesty were first juniors and congratulations to all juniors who took part. EDYC made a special presentation to Cullaun SC of a trophy on honour of our recently deceased member and Wayfarer sailor Emmet O Mahony. He had a heart of gold, died of a heart condition and the trophy will be presented to a club member who has contributed to the club in the same spirit of generosity that Emmet lived. Emmet crewed for me in the Worlds in Weymouth. Thanks to OOD, Dave Mullaly (Killaoe Sailing Club), rescue boat crew and shore party who fed us all when we arrived safely ashore. A great weekend was had by all, thanks to all our visitors and we look forward to welcoming you to our special club in the Mid west of Ireland.
